Senior student Bü?ra Nur Ayd?n suggested that the students should improve
themselves as soon as possible on the drawing program, AUTOCAT. She told
students that when they started to faculty, it would be beneficial to use this
program quickly while they were designing up their homework and projects. When
she was in ELS, she learned this program from her sister and now she is faster
than her friends. In the first year of the faculty, Bü?ra has received basic
design lessons and she thought that she was not talented. Later, she has improved
herself by studying the surroundings and concentrating on the work of the other
students. She recommended examining every building around them because they
will gain a point of view in this way. She has done her internship in the
subway company and worked with electrical and mechanical engineers. She has
done a lot of work outside of her own business during internship. And she
learned a lot of things from this experience. She advises them to focus on
learning only without judging the work.

Mirac has mentioned that students at the internship will face many
surprises. He said that the information they learned, in theory, is much more
fun in practice. The contractors will be going to push them very hard, but
students should definitely protect their attitude. But at the same time, he
learned during the internship that he should think about the man who will give
him money. He suggested that architects should put their own rules and
principles in their working life and that they should have a unique pattern.

Second
Session:

A total of nine preparatory class of architecture students, four
freshmen architecture students participated in the second session. The
session’s guest was Assist. Professor Dr. Carl Haddrell. Also, senior
architectural students Afra Nur Ayd?n and Ömer Soyer shared their experiences
during the session. Professor Carl does not speak Turkish, so we translated his
speech. Before I started the second session, I explained the purpose of the
project to the new students. I mentioned what the students learned from past
session. I gave them information about the introduction of Professor Carl and
what we will do in this session.  

Professor Carl completed his PhD at the University of Manchester and he
worked few years in Mexico City. Now, he has been working in IUS for several
years. He teaches students to Understanding of Design, Urban Design, History of
Architecture, Contemporary of Architecture Theory and Urban Lands Economy
Property Problems Courses. He said he would talk about what he taught in
faculty lessons. He said he would explain the contents of the lessons. He
mentioned that the English level of the students should be good for the better
understanding of courses. He said that the students did not always learn
concrete things in his lecture. Sometimes students will learn even without realizing
what they have learned in his courses. He says that valuable information that
students learn without realizing always gives them an advantage in their professional
life. He believes that understanding the philosophy of the architect will take
them one step further than the other students.

He selected this session’s topic as giving information about the
history of architecture and the city & contemporary architectural theory. He
said that the purpose of the teaching of the history and critical analysis of
architecture is to provide the student with essential skills and knowledge that
will allow them to pursue a successful career in architectural practice.  He says that the identity of the architectural
history and theory can change person to person, but learning these theories
makes it easier to understand the differences in design. Professor says
students after completed their education life and become architects, generally
have two ways.  Inspired by history and
theories, they can design their own, or they can draw simple, ugly, and
reminiscent buildings that we have encountered in the industry.  He says that they will decide which to do in
future with the importance they give to these lessons.

According to him, when students understand how theory can apply in
buildings they can be a successful architect. Teaching and learning at the
university is not just limited to the studio. Connections to more of early
works help to understand today’s design problems. His courses provide whether
architects are being influenced by the past. Also, it contributes to the
ability to invent new things. Appropriate historical context can deepen the
understanding of all types of architecture students. Understanding how the
architect interprets and uses other historic buildings helps students in their
design work.

Professor said that, whilst in faculty, students will gain a
comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the structural, mathematical and
physical components of architectural practice. This information will enable the
students to make a building functional. He believes that architecture is an art
and the successful architect is not just an engineer. He says the successful
architect creates design objects that exist in the everyday world and the
imagination of those who come into contact with their work. The buildings that
the architects build are influencing both the people who live in it and the
people living around it. Also, it is in the study of the history and context of
architecture that the student learns to turn their practice into an art that
draws upon the broadest possible influences from history and contemporary
practice.

Professor Carl said that he teaches details of the development of
architectural practice from pre-history through to the 21st century in his
History of Architecture lecture. The course does this in 3 courses which
progress chronologically, each developing on the themes discussed in previous
semesters. Generally, lecture starting with the first human urban habitations
in Mesopotamia, the course progresses via Greece and Rome, Byzantium and Europe
and the Middle East to give the students a detailed understanding, not only of
how architectural practice developed but also its significance today. Through
the medieval and renaissance period, the source moves towards themes of
industrialization, modernism, and postmodernism. Professor Carl tells his
students that they can receive inspiration from history by learning these
theories and also they can create buildings that are exactly the opposite of
history. Professor Carl told us how many columns are not important in the
historic buildings. The important things are what they used and what their
style is. When students realize the purpose of using the
material in history, they can create contemporary things using contemporary
materials. While Professor shares this information, he also showed photos of
the past architectural and contemporary architecture using PowerPoint.

Also, Professor Carl explained the course content and what he teaches
to students in lecture as follows; re-examine some of the themes already
discussed in History of Architecture and the City with the intention of
discovering the broader context and motivations behind architectural
developments. He said that his teaching methodology is flexible and innovative,
mixing the more traditional form of a lecture with the more interactive elements
of seminars. His students play a full participatory role via group discussions
of issues, themes, and texts. Teamwork is also integral to the teaching
methodology for him.
